At Hill Country Natives, our mission is to promote the sustainable cultivation of native Texas trees and shrubs and to increase their use in landscaping. We specialize in native trees and shrubs and perennial edible plants that are well-adapted to central Texas.
Native plants offer many benefits. They require less water. (A top priority). They improve wildlife habitat. They support genetic diversity. They require less fertilizer and pesticide, thus reducing pollution and cost. And they improve the connection between people and the land.
Over the last few decades we’ve witnessed a degradation of native plant communities in central Texas. We feel that the loss of native plants is having a negative impact on the environment and on all of us. We believe that by increasing the use of native plants we can help restore our unique central Texas environment and quality of life. Our work is informed by the ethics and principles of permaculture design.
Our Learn page contains informational material in several sections. To learn how we cultivate healthy plants, and to get some tips, see Cultivation. And check out Articles & Links to read up on Green Living Screens, Fire-wise landscaping, Fungi, and other key topics. Enjoy our Plant Showcase too!
Whatever your situation, we’ve got native plants and edible plants for you. Even if your “Hill Country acreage” is a small backyard or just a balcony. Whether you already know a lot or are just getting started, Hill Country Natives is here to help. We’ve been in the business of nurturing Texas natives since 2001 and we’ve been stewards of our own Hill Country home for over 30 years.
You can get Hill Country Natives plants at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center, the Natural Gardener, and Oma’s Garten Pflanzen in Killeen as well as several other area nurseries – look for the Rootmaker containers. Or you can order via our SHOP page right here on this website. You can also shop at our nursery in Leander, TX. (Driving directions and map on our Contact/Visit page.)
Schedule a Tour:
We offer tours of the food forest, nursery and the surrounding property, tailored to your interests. We want to help others grow plants and live sustainably (or generatively, beyond sustainable.) and during the tour we will share whats worked for us and what hasn’t so you don’t have to re-invent the wheel. Weather your a professional, a garden club, a family or an individual we welcome you to take one of these fun, informative and educational tours. We are available most Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays. Please e-mail Mike Wolfert ([email protected]) to receive a survey to fill out so we know your main areas of interest and to schedule the day and time of your tour. The cost is $50 an hour and the maximum number of people per tour is 25.
“Just a quick note to say I was very impressed by the root system on the Montezuma Cypress … I planted it a few hours after I picked it up from you and it was perfect! The structure was very dense. More importantly the branching from the root flare was perfect and no circling or girdling root on the outside of the root ball! … You definitely have me sold. … Thanks for all your help. I plan to use your nursery as much as I can.” – D.L.
