Austin Progressive Potluckers: Urban Patchwork Neighborhood Farms

Potluck date:
Friday, 25 March 2011 - 6:00pm to 9:00pm

Urban Patchwork (UP) Neighborhood Farms is a community-based organization redefining "Community Supported Agriculture" while creating new, successful futures for farmers in the urban setting. They work with neighbors to turn unused yard space into farmland that provides fresh, organically grown produce and eggs to the nearby residents of each neighborhood farm. UP not only helps provide food for our bodies, they offer farm start-up programs; workshops for residents on nutrition, home food production and storage; training and job creation; and more. Neighborhood residents and businesses host farm plots in their yards in exchange for fresh veggies and other opportunities that reduce cost of living and increase the quality and value of their land and lives.

Join us for the March Potluck to learn how UP works alongside neighbors to define a food culture and bring people together to grow fresh, local food that is accessible and sustainable. We will be visiting a house/UP farm demo site that serves the Crestview/Brentwood Farm Co-op and hosts 3000 s.f. of vegetable garden, two chicken yards and a rabbit yard. We will eat together in a lovely outdoor setting in the garden under the stars. Visit www.urbanpatchwork.org for more information or contact Paige Hill at paige@urbanpatchwork.org

Please Bring:
A dish that serves six to eight people. Our host will provide plates/cups/etc. and will have water and tea/coffee.Additional beverages to share are welcome. Alcohol encouraged ;-)

More from our host regarding thoughts on food to bring:
Seasonally inspired dishes would be good. March is on the tail end of winter, so leafy greens, fruits like grapefruit, nuts, and roots are typical as well as new baby greens coming in for spring. Canned/preserved foods from fall are also typical this time of year. If we have hunters/fishers among us, meat from your non-industrial harvest would be a welcome addition to the meal.

House/UP farm demo site at 5703 Duval St., Austin, 78752

The easiest approach is to find your favorite way to Airport and 2222/Koenig. From there (You'll see Spec's if you're in the right place) travel West on 2222. Just across the rail road tracks you'll turn right (North) on Duval St. We are the second house on the right immediately after you turn on Duval. Parking in front of the house will be tight. Carpooling, transit, two-wheels are encouraged.

Several bus stops drop off at Airport and 2222 or at Avenue F and 2222 (10, 27 and 350 - check CapMetro website for
