Austin Progressive Potluckers: Austin Chapter of Amnesty International

Potluck date:
Saturday, 16 May 2009 - 6:30pm to 9:00pm

Amnesty International (AI) is a worldwide movement of people who campaign for internationally recognized human rights for all. The organization's mission is to conduct research and generate action to prevent and end grave abuses of human rights and to demand justice  for those whose rights have been violated. AI exerts influence on governments, political bodies, companies, and intergovernmental groups to stop violence against women, defend the rights and dignity of those trapped in poverty, abolish the death penalty, oppose torture, free prisoners of conscience, protect the rights of refugees and migrants, and regulate the global arms trade.

AI's strategies include mobilizing public pressure through mass demonstrations, vigils, and direct lobbying, as well as online and offline campaigning. The Austin chapter meets once a month to write letters, lobbies elected officials, and adopts particular prisoners of conscience to support. They attend and table at public events to recruit new members and raise awareness of human rights issues. Learn more about Amnesty at: http://www.amnesty.org/. The local contact person is Charles Bierley, 704-6440, and if you have any questions about the potluck, you can call Kam Magor, 440-1464, kamtree@gmail.com.
