Start dusting off your gardening tools and make sure there's plenty of space in your trunk for veggie plants... it's time to plant your spring garden! To help you get started, Johnson's Backyard Garden will hold its annual Heirloom Transplant Sale the first three Saturdays in March from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at our farm on Hergotz Lane. (That's March 6, March 13 and March 20 - Come early for the best selection!)
Thirty-six varieties of organic heirloom tomatoes, squash, melons, peppers and eggplant will be available. Heirloom seeds have been saved from generation to generation and are renowned for their superior taste and beauty. Many of the varieties available from JBG are listed in Slow Food's Ark of Taste and are in danger of extinction. By promoting and eating these heirlooms, you help ensure they remain in production and on our plates.
Transplants are available in either 4" pots or 6-packs. The cost of a 4" pot is $3; a 6-pack is $10. We're also offering farm-selected sampler packs that offer an assortment of varieties at a great price!
We are also accepting orders online through
www.jbgorganic.com. Starting next week, current CSA members who place a minimum $20 order online can opt for JBG to deliver transplants along with their scheduled box pickup. Otherwise, online orders will be self-serve pickup at the farm Tuesday, Wednesday or Friday afternoons until 7 p.m. in front of the greenhouse.
To order through JBG's website, simply add selections to your online cart and enter your payment information through Google Checkout. To ensure your order has been processed, please place your order at least 24 hours prior to pickup and make sure you receive a confirmation email from Google. Email
sarah [at] jbgorganic [dot] com with any questions or if you'd like to pay by check.
Over the next few weeks we'll also sell transplants at the Wednesday Triangle Market as well as the Saturday Sunset Valley and Downtown Farmers' Markets.
