Third Coast Sunday – “Koch Brothers Exposed” screening

“Third Coast Sunday,” a series of monthly gatherings to connect social justice activists, will focus its final meeting of the season on the way in which concentrated wealth is corrupting electoral politics more than ever.

We will screen the new film “Koch Brothers Exposed,”http://www.kochbrothersexposed.com/  a hard-hitting investigation of the 1% at its very worst. This full-length documentary film on Charles and David Koch -- two of the world’s richest and most powerful men -- is the latest from director Robert Greenwald (“Wal-Mart: the High Cost of Low Price,” “Outfoxed,” and Rethink Afghanistan). The billionaire brothers bankroll a vast network of organizations that work to undermine the interests of the 99% on issues ranging from Social Security to the environment to civil rights. This film uncovers the Kochs’ corruption and suggests ways to enhance real democracy.

For a detailed account of the Koch brothers’ political tactics, see Jane Mayer’s 2010 New Yorker article, “Covert Operations: The billionaire brothers who are waging a war against Obama.” http://www.newyorker.com/reporting/2010/08/30/100830fa_fact_mayer?currentPage=all

Doors will open at 6 p.m. for socializing, featuring a variety of snacks and Red Rabbit Cooperative Bakery’s vegan donuts. The film screening will begin at 6:30 p.m., followed by a discussion.

The Third Coast Sunday theme of “Celebrating Progressive Politics and Radical Roots” reminds us of the need to critique the existing order and create a new world. We ask: What needs to be tore down, and what needs to be built up? This monthly gathering is designed as a place to share ideas, build connections, and find opportunities for action -- both for those new to political organizing and those who’ve been in the fight for decades.

Admission is free, with donations accepted to help with the costs of food. For more information, contact Braden Latham-Jones, [email protected].
